Intervista a KK NULL (Kazuyuki Kishino)

Kazuyuki Kishino è una delle figure musicali più interessanti della scena noise giapponese. Un lungo viaggio tra progetti passati e futuri, cultura ed evoluzioni della scena musicale. Una carriera musicale molto particolare costellata da collaborazioni di primissimo livello ed una discografia vastissima.

Kazuyuki Kishino è uno dei più grandi artisti della scena noise. Dagli anni 80, è conosciuto in tutto il mondo. Ha all’attivo molte collaborazioni ed è il padre di progetti come  K.K. Null,  Zeni Geva, ecc.. Ma…se vorresti presentarti, come lo faresti?
Bene, sono solo un ragazzo che è sempre stato ossessionato dai suoni e dalla musica. Da qui la passione della mia vita, che consiste nell’esplorare questi universi.

Ho apprezzato molto “Extra space, extra time” and “Mondo Paradoxa”. I tuoi lavori sono mix di passioni e stili diversi atti a creare qualcosa di nuovo ed unico. Sei soddisfatto? Che ne pensi a riguardo?
Si, sono quasi soddisfatto di quello che ne è uscito alla fine. La cosa più interessante sulla collaborazione è quel qualcosa che accade inaspettatamente e che esce fuori dal processo lavorativo…la chimica perfetta che mi ispira e che mi aiuta a creare qualcosa di unico. Inoltre, questo provoca sempre un cambiamento in me. Quello che succede alla gente mi fornisce la materia grezza dalla quale poi comporre qualcosa di interessante che alla fine comporrà l’intero album.

Se deve consigliarci un libro, una canzone e un film, quali sarebbero?
Il libro prefirito di sempre è: “Ten Thousand Light Years From Home”, “Out Of The Everywhere” by James Tiptree, Jr. Il libro preferito al momento è “Life Ascending / The Ten Great Inventions Of Evolution” di Nick Lane
Musica preferita di ogni tempo : Beatles, Carpenters, King Crimson, Miles Davis, Area. Musica preferita al momento : Iannis Xenakis (Orchestral works).  Film preferito di ogni tempo : 2001 A Space Odyssey (by Stanley Kubrick)

Perchè ti piacciono gli AREA?
Secondo me, gli AREA sono uno dei miracoli musicali degli ultimi anni ‘60 – inizio anni ’70.
I musicisti di maggior talento e abilità si sono riuniti insieme e hanno creato uno dei migliori jazz/rock/avant-garde music con la miglior strumentazione e tecnologia del tempo. Tutto ciò in modo molto politico, emotivo e intellettuale. Inoltre, mi piace molto l’influenza dalla musica tradizionale “Balkan”.

Il mercato musicale è strano. Myspace è morto e arrivano bandcamp e soundcloud. Il mercato dei CD è in declino ma i vinili stanno tornando di moda. Ritorna il concetto del DIY e la distribuzione a livelli. Che ne pensi di tutto questo?
Fondamentalmente, tutto ciò è fuori controllo. Io credo che il progresso della tecnologia abbia dato un grande impatto e influenzato la vita e la società. Non possiamo scappare da questo. E’ lo stesso discorso che vale per la moda e le tendenze.

Nel 2004 hai suonato in Italia. Com’è andata? Hai collaborato anche con OVO. Com’è stata come esperienza? Che ne pensi della musica italiana? Hai contatti con etichette italiane?
Sono stato in tour con il chitarrista giapponese Seijiro Murayama come ANP (Absolut Null Punkt) e ho suonato in un paio di concerti in Italia nel 2004. In realtà ho incontrato OVO la prima volta ad Amburgo, in Germania nel 2010, ma non ho ancora suonato con loro. Abbiamo provato a fare un tour insieme, ma non ci siamo riusciti. Magari ci riproveremo nel prossimo futuro.

La tua carriera musicale è costellata di molti successi: le collaborazioni con Merzbow e Z’ev, molti lavori sotto la Neurot, vari mini-tour e la partecipazione in “JOHN PEEL SESSION” alla BBC. Ricordi qualcosa di particolarmente piacevole relativo a questi eventi?
E’ molto difficile scegliere uno o due dei tanti ricordi legati a queste esperienze, sia positivi che negativi.

L’intervista è finita. Hai qualcosa in più da dirci o qualche anticipazione sui progetti futuri?
Inizierò presto a pubblicare le mie nuove opere tramite distribuzione digitale. 3 album (“Cryptozoon 1, 2, 3”) dovrebbero presto essere disponibili in qualche store digitale come iTunes, Amazon, ecc. Altri 3 album (“Cryptozoon 4”, “A Page of Madness (colonna sonora)”, “Eternal Implosion “) sono in attesa di essere inseriti. Nel mese di ottobre sarò a suonare in Francia, Norvegia e Belgio con un progetto “trio” insieme al francese Julien Ottavi, sound artist, e il norvegese Gisle Froysland, artista visivo. Dopo di che, sarò impegnato nelle sessioni di lavoro con il ballerino e coreografo francese Guillaume Marie a Parigi per il nostro progetto teatrale.

Kazuyuki Kishino is one of the most big artist in noise music. From the 80′ years, he is famous all over the world. Collaborations and many projects like  K.K. Null,  Zeni Geva, ecc.. But..if you need to present yourself, what would you say?
Well, I’m just a guy who’s been obsessed by sound & music and devoting my life to explore the universe of sound & music.

I was very impressed from “Extra space, extra time” and “Mondo Paradoxa”. Your work is a mix of style and different passion to create something new and unique. Are you satisfied? What are you think about it?
Yes, I’m quite satisfied with how they came out in the end. The most interesting thing about collaboration is, something unexpected is happening and coming out from the working process, which is good chemistry and inspires me to create something unique. Also, it’s always a challenge to me. Because most of the cases people just give me raw materials of their sounds and I must make something interesting out of them and create composed pieces and produce an entire album.

What’s you favorite book, music and movie of this time?  Something to recommend to our readers?

Why do you like Area?
In my opinion, AREA is one of the miracles happened in the music scene in the late 60s – early 70s.
The most talented & skillful musicians got together and created one of the best jazz/rock/avant-garde contemporary music with the best studio equipment & technology of the time. And, very political, emotional, intellectual. Also, I like their influence from “Balkan” traditional music.

The music market is strange. Myspace dies, and comes bandcamp abd SoundCloud. The market for CDs is declining  but the vinyl are back in fashion. Return the concept of DIY and distribution levels. What do you think about it?
Basically it’s out of control, I mean the progress of technology has been giving immense impact and influence on our life and society and we cannot avoid it or escape from it. It’s same about fashion & trend.

In 2004 you are playing in Italy. What about it? you are playing with OVO. How was it? What are you think about Italian music? Have you some contact with Italian bands?
As far as I remember I did NOT play with OVO in 2004. I was touring with a Japanese drummer Seijiro Murayama as ANP (Absolut Null Punkt) and played a couple of shows in Italy in 2004. I met OVO for the first time in Hamburg, Germany in 2010 and haven’t played  yet with them. We tried to make a tour together but didn’t work out. Maybe we will try again in the near future. AREA is one of my best favorite bands.

Your musical career is dotted with many peaks: the collaborations with Merzbow and Z’ev, many works under the Neurot Rec, various mini-tours and participation in “JOHN PEEL SESSION” at the BBC. Do you remember any particularly pleasant event of your musical career?
It’s very difficult to pick up one or two, as I have so many memories and experiences both good and bad ones.

The interview is over. Something more to explain or any plans for the future?
I will start soon to release my new works via digital distribution. 3 albums (“Cryptozoon 1, 2, 3”) should appear soon on some digital stores like iTunes, Amazon, etc. And, 3 more albums (“Cryptozoon 4”, “A Page of Madness (soundtrack)”, “Eternal Implosion”) are waiting for being uploaded.  In October I will come to play in France, Norway and Belgium, which is “trio” project with French sound artist Julien Ottavi and Norwegian visual artist Gisle Froysland. After that, I will have working sessions with French dancer/choreographer Guillaume Marie in Paris for our collaborative theatre project.
