Intervista ai TIDELANDS

Intervista a Gabriel Montana Leis. Insieme a Mie Araki ha dato vita al progetto Tidelands. Il loro primo disco si chiama If ed è una raccolta di nove pregiatissime perle pop.

Come hai deciso di cominciare a lavorare a “If…”? Ci puoi dire qualcosa su di te e sui Tidelands?
Alla fine del 2009 la mia band precedente, The Love X Nowhere volgeva allo scioglimento. Mi aveva reclutato Mie Araki per essere il batterista per l’ultimo periodo di quella band con alcuni concerti di alto livello ed una serie di opening per i Dredg. Ho avuto una manciata di canzoni che non sembravano appropriate per TLXN ma che ero desideroso di esplorare e un disco abbastanza concentrato, anche se non ben definito. In questi primi mesi non si parlava di una band, non c’era nessuna decisione deliberata sulla strumentazione, abbiamo sempre condiviso solo uno studio. Io e Mie ci incrociavamo abbastanza spesso e senza agenda, solo per approfondire la musica che stavo scrivendo. Campionare in loop nuovi suonare è diventata parte delle novità del nostro sound. Mi sono trovato anche a scrivere melodie che fin dall’inizio sapevo che erano destinate per un corno. Ho avuto l’idea di reclutare una coppia locale di suonatori di tromba facendolo aderire a questo progetto emergente. Inoltre sempre per un capriccio, non avendo mai suonato con un corno prima, ho comprato un bellissimo flicorno d’epoca e ho cominciato dall’inizio non essendo in grado di suonare una singola nota. Nello stesso periodo, Mie scelse un sintetizzatore Moog Lil Phatty da aggiungere al suo ensemble di strumenti e ha iniziato ad imparare a suonare la batteria e gestire i sintetizzatori.

Avete una pagina web su bandcamp che è un po’ il vostro punto di riferimento. Che ne pensi di bandcamp, soundcloud, myspace, etc..?
Sono contento di avere la possibilità usufruire di questi servizi, e mi piace l’interfaccia e la struttura di bandcamp. Questo è solo il modo in cui vengono svolte molto attività musicali e tutti i musicisti indipendenti devono utilizzare tutte le opzioni che gli vengono date. Detto questo, non può sostituire un’ etichetta o un’agenzia di organizzazione. A volte si ha la sensazione che molte di queste tecnologie pendono tra l’industria musicale che sta cambiando e l’ignoto.

Siete soddisfatti di “If ..” e del videoclip “Holy Grail”? Come nasce e si sviluppa il processo di scrittura e registrazione delle vostre canzoni?
Qualsiasi soddisfazione è temporanea, preferisco concentrarmi su quello che sto facendo in questo momento. “If …” rappresenta un periodo transitorio per me ed è stato un grande successo. Alcune tracce come “The Ship”, “Sixes and Seven” e “Marigolds” sono quasi esattamente come le ho immaginate. Il video di Holy Grail è assolutamente incredibile. Abbiamo avuto quasi nulla a che fare con la produzione del video, Ami ne aveva completa libertà, dunque vedere il prodotto finale è stata una sorpresa incredibile per noi. Mi piace vedere la mia musica interpretata da un altro artista, tutto ciò mi ha soddisfatto molto.

Puoi spiegarci qualcosa circa la collaborazione con la Magik * Magik Orchestra?
Abbiamo la fortuna di vivere nello stesso tempo e posto dove esiste la M * MO . Minna è un visionario e un talento straordinario. Era perfetto per il nostro progetto. Per alcuni brani dove Mie e io abbiamo avuto particolari idee melodiche, solo aver sfruttato le abilità musicali della M * MO è stato qualcosa di fondamentale e importante. In altre canzoni come “The Ship”, Minna ha avuto completa libertà creativa per gestire la parte orchestrale. I risultati credo che parlino da soli.

Qual è il tuo libro libro, cd e film preferito di questo periodo? Qualcosa da consigliare ai nostri lettori?
Sto amando veramente il nuovissimo album degli Efterklang dal titolo Magic Chairs, così come Warpaint, Bon Iver e Beirut. Con la mia parte retrò sto riscoprendo The Fixx e Talking Heads, specialmente con Remain in Light. Ci sono alcuni gruppi locali di San Francisco davvero buoni al momento, come i Birds, Batteries, Geographer e Tartuffi. Mi sono goduto alcuni libri e film ultimamente, ma nulla è stato particolarmente commovente per essere menzionato.

La mia intervista è finita. Ci volete dire qualcosa in più o i vostri eventuali piani per il futuro?
Stiamo per cominciare la registrazione del nostro prossimo album e sono davvero eccitato sia per il nuovo sound che per la direzione che stiamo seguendo. Ho intenzione di continuare a lavorare su di esso nei prossimi 6 mesi e abbiamo come data di rilascio la primavera del prossimo anno. Grazie mille per il vostro entusiasmo ed interesse in ciò che stiamo facendo. Ci terremo sicuramente aggiornati e spero un giorno di potervi far visita in modo da suonare per voi ei vostri lettori. How did you decide to begin working on “If…”? Can you speak about you and Tidelands?
In late 2009 my previous band The Love X Nowhere was drawing to a close. We had recruited / bribed Mie Araki to be the drummer for the last era of that band with some high profile gigs as an opening act for friends Dredg. I had a handful of songs which just didn’t seem appropriate for TLXN that I was yearning to explore, and a pretty focused drive though in no particular direction. In those first few months there was no talk of starting a band, no deliberate decisions on instrumentation, but as we still shared a studio, Mie and I would cross paths there quite often and without agenda just explore the music I was writing. Looping became a big part of this new sound, and I found myself writing melodies that from the start I knew were meant for a horn. I had fantasies of recruiting one of a couple local standout trumpet players to join this newly emerging project, though I knew in reality I was in no place to acquire or hire this level of talent. So on a whim, never having played a horn before, I purchased a beautiful vintage Benge flugelhorn and began at the beginning, not able to form a single note. Around this same time Mie chose a Moog Lil Phatty synthesizer to add to her ensemble of instruments and began her own process of learning to play the drums and synth at the same time.

You have a webpage on bandcamp. What do you think about bandcamp, soundcloud, myspace, etc?
I’m glad to have the options of these services, and I really like the bandcamp model and interface. This is just the way things are done now, and all independent musicians need to use the options given. That said, it’s no substitute for a label and the kind of organized exposure they can provide. It still feels like most of these technologies are in between steps as the industry shifts toward an unknown.

Are you satisfied about “If..” and the videoclip “Holy Grail”? How is making the process of writing and recording of your production?
Any satisfaction is very fleeting as I’m more focused on what I’m doing now. “If…” represents a transitional period for me, and as that it is very successful. Certain tracks like “The Ship”, “Sixes and Sevens”, and “Marigolds” are just about exactly how I envisioned them. The video for Holy Grail is absolutely stunning. We had almost nothing to do with the production of the video, Ami had complete creative freedom and control, so seeing the final product was an amazing surprise for us as well. I love to see my music interpreted by another artist, so in this way is was very satisfying.

Can you explain something about the collaboration with Magik*Magik Orchestra?
We are blessed to live in a time and place where something like M*MO exists. Minna is a visionary and an amazing talent and it was a perfect fit for us to work together on this project. For some tracks where Mie and I had specific melodic ideas, just having access to the quality musicians of M*MO was the most important thing, and then for other songs like “The Ship”, Minna had complete creative freedom to create her own vision and orchestration for the song. The results I think speak for themselves.

What’s you favorite book, music and movie of this time? Something to recommend to our readers?
I’m still really loving the newest Efterklang album Magic Chairs, as well as Warpaint, Bon Iver, and Beirut. On my retro side I’m digging The Fixx and Talking Heads, especially Remain in Light. There are some really good local San Francisco bands right now like Birds and Batteries, Geographer, and Tartuffi as well. I’ve enjoyed some books and films lately, but nothing so moving to me as to be quoted on.

My interview is over. Something more to explain or any plans for the future?
We are well in to the recording of our next album and I’m really excited about the new sounds and directions. I plan to keep working on it over the next 6 months or so and have a release ready for springtime next year. Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and interest in what we are doing.
