I Lorena B potrebbero tranquillamente essere considerati un gruppo scandinavo sia per il modo – a tratti etereo a tratti feroce e tragico – in cui Adi Ulmansky interpreta i testi dei brani, sia per l’uso di basi elettroniche fredde e minimali, che possono far pensare ai migliori Mùm.
Dalle ceneri di quello che è probabilmente il nostro gruppo israeliano preferito sono nati altri progetti di maggior successo internazionale.
La cantante Adi Ulmansky – i cui video sono stati più volte entusiasticamente supportati da Noisey – ha iniziato una carriera solista che l’ha già vista evolvere da un primo mixtape intitolato “Shit just got real” – in cui si alternavano caoticamente certe sonorità riconducibili a M.I.A, una personalità non troppo distante a quella di Yo-Landi Vi$$er e momenti più intimi come in Theroux or False – fino al più recente EP “Hurricane Girl” in cui comincia ad emergere quella personalità più definita che trova il suo apice in brani come “Was it you”.
Yoav Sa’ar e Roi Avital invece hanno fondato il trio Garden City Movement, che lo scorso 25 novembre ha debuttato con l’Ep di debutto “Entertainment”, il cui primo singolo è stato ampiamente supportato da Pitchfork e apprezzato dalla critica di tutto il mondo.

Lorena B could easily be considered a “scandinavian band” for the manner – sometimes ethereal, sometimes fierce and tragic – in which Adi Ulmansky performs the lyrics, or for using cold and minimal electronic bases which could remind you of the best Mùm’s production.
Many widely and internationally recognised music projects were born from the ashes of this band which probably is our favourite israeli one.
Singer Adi Ulmansky – whose videos have frequently been enthusiastically supported by Noisey – started her own solo career and already evolved since her first mixtape “Shit just got real” – in which some M.I.A.’s sounds alternate to a personality closer to Yo-Landi Vi$$er’s one and to intimate moments as we can find out in “Theroux or False” – getting to the most recent EP “Hurricane Girl” showing the emerging of a clearer personality having its culmination in “Was it you”.
Yoav Sa’ar and Roi Avital founded the trio Garden City Movement that debuted with the ep “Entertainment” the last 25th of november, having the first single largely supported by Pitchfork and appreciated by the worldwide critics.

Dan Bloch, Yuval Haring e Yuval Guttmann sono i Vaadat Charigim, trio shoegaze israeliano all’esordio con l’album “The World Is Well Lost”. Il cantato in ebraico non allontana dalla bontà del progetto, che si candida ad essere ricordato come una delle migliori e più curiose uscite dell’anno, per quanto riguarda il settore. Ci sono tutti gli ingredienti più classici dello shoegaze: suoni dilatati e lontani, a creare profonde atmosfere ora più aggressive e taglienti (“Kezef Al Hamayim”), ora più levigate e tendenti quasi a certo dream-pop (“Ze Beseder Lefahed”). Parte del merito va sicuramente alla voce, che in più di qualche frangente ricorda in positivo quella di Robert Smith, e che riesce a tenere sempre alto il livello di malinconia di cui tutto il disco si fa sanissimo portatore.

Dan Bloch, Yuval Haring e Yuval Guttmann are Vaadat Charigim, an israeli shoegaze trio at their debut with the album “The World is Well Lost”. The hebrew lyrics doesn’t divert the attention from the greatness of the project, that runs as one of the best and interesting release of the year in this music branch.
All shoegaze ingredients are present: far and swollen sounds, at first deep and then impetuous and sharp atmospheres (“Kezef Al Hamayim”), then smooth and closer to some dream-pop ones (“Ze Beseder Lefahed”). Part of its success’ merits goes to the voice that sometimes positively reminds of Robert Smith and that is good at keeping the melancholy level on top.

Arrivata al grande pubblico dopo aver vinto la prima edizione di Kokhav Nolad – ovvero la versione israeliana di Pop Idol – Ninet Tayeb riesce a fondere con grande eleganza un’anima indipendente ad una voce mainstream, che potrebbe far impallidire le più grandi pop star internazionali. A questo proposito la sua versione di Crazy riesce nell’impresa di confrontarsi con l’originale a tal punto da rendere quasi impossibile una qualsiasi critica negativa.
Se la sua carriera nella scena mainstream israeliana è costellata da hit di grande successo come la sopra citata “Crazy”, la sua decisione di registrare un album alt-rock come “Sympathetic nervous system” avrà pur minato il consenso di molti dei suoi fans, ma le ha fatto ottenere il nostro amore incondizionato per l’abilità con cui è riuscita ad incastrare una voce da pop star a momenti che dimostrano sia grande coraggio artistico e sia totale disinteresse per le possibili reazioni del pubblico. Un coraggio che manca sia nel mainstream che nella musica indipendente, visto che, se spesso nel primo caso si ragiona in base ai gusti della massa conformista, nel secondo si ci basa su quelli della massa anticonformista.

Ninet Tayeb reached people at large winning the first edition of Kokhav Nolad (the israeli version of Pop Idol) being good at gracefully blending an independent heart with a mainstream voice able to turn biggest international popstars pale. For example, her version of “Crazy” succeeds in the challenging confrontation with the original song, making any negative critic quite impossible.
So, since her mainstream career is full of famous hits like “Crazy” her decision of recording the alt-rock album “Sympathetic nervous system” probably let her fans’ approval down but, doing so, she earned our unconditional love because of her ability in stitching her pop star voice with great artistic bravery and total indifference to the audience reactions. This kind of courage runs out both in the mainstream music context than in the independent ones, who try their best to sound anticonformist losing their own sound.

I Bonjour Machines sono quattro ragazzini che vengono da Tel-Aviv e fanno emo. Ragazzini nel senso che hanno per davvero massimo 16 anni a testa. Ed emo nel senso che fanno per davvero emo, senza troppi calcoli, buttando fuori quello che c’è dentro, com’è giusto che sia quando si ha quest’età. “Level Up!” è la prima prova su lunga distanza dopo un ep e un bootleg live rilasciati a cavallo tra il 2012 e il 2013. 11 pezzi che dimostrano intuizioni fuori dal comune, riusciti e continui cambi di tempo e di atmosfere, nel nome di una sana ingenuità adolescenziale forgiata magicamente da una tecnica da quasi veterani e un uso della voce perfettamente in bilico tra il biasciare irrispetoso e la vincente ricerca di uno stile unico. Provare per credere le evoluzioni chitarristiche di “Instrumental”, la carica esplosiva di “You Did It”, o il crescendo da manuale di “Challenger”, tre tra gli episodi migliori di un disco in cui si fatica a trovare punti deboli.

Bonjour Machines are three kids from Tel-Aviv who play emo. With the term “kids” we mean that they really are 16 years old each, and with the term “emo” we mean that they REALLY play emo, without thinking a lot about it, getting rid of their inner emotions. “Level Up!” is their first full-length after an Ep and a live bootleg released between 2012 and 2013. 11 tracks showing unordinary intuitions, right changing of rhythm and atmosphere in the name of the teen-aged ingenuity, magically shaped by almost-veterans technique and the singing, hanging in the balance between the research of an insolent mumbling and an unique style. The guitar’s maneuvers in “Instrumental”, the explosive charge in “You Did It”, the by-the-book crescendo of “Challenger” are the three best episodes in an album lacking of weak points.

“Robin” è il terzo LP di Efrat Ben-Zur, cantante ed attrice israeliana al suo debutto per la prestigiosa etichetta Anova Music che racchiude alcuni dei più interessanti artisti della nazione (3421, Amit Erez, Vaadat Charigim). L’album è composto da 9 poesie di Emily Dickinson magistralmente trasformate in canzoni e interpretate dalla splendida voce di Efrat.
Se in genere i tentativi di trasformare la poesia in musica falliscono miseramente, quello della cantante di Tel Aviv è un successo senza alcun punto debole a partire dalla prima traccia “Bee” fino all’ultima “Till the end”.

“Robin” is the third LP by Efrat Ben-Zur, israeli singer and actress at her debut on the eminent label Anova Music that have released some of the most interesting israeli artists like 3421, Amit Erez and Vaadat Charigim. The album is composed by 9 Emily Dickinson’s poems skillfully transformed in songs by Efrat’s wonderful voice. Attempts of making music from poems often fail but Tel-Aviv singer’s try is a succes without any weakness, starting with “Bee” and finishing with “Till the end”.

“Hard Magic” è l’album di debutto di Rotem Or, di cui vi abbiamo parlato recentemente presentandovi il suo ultimo brano “Whois” realizzato per la compilation di BLDG5 Records. Se quest’ultimo è forse la prova di una sua crescita che potrebbe portarla a realizzare un album di grande valore, con il precedente era già riuscita a dimostrare le sue qualità e a inanellare brani molto interessanti come i due singoli “Dear Sir” e “This Is What You All Came For”. Il suo è un indie-folk elettronico che alterna passaggi spoken ad una voce eterea che ricorda quella di Naoko Sasaki (Piana).

“Hard Magic” is the debut album by Rotem Or, who we already introduced to you with her last song “Whois”, realized for the BLDG5 Records’ compilation. If this is the evidence of her own growth that could bring her to produce a high value album, with the previous release she had the ability to show her qualities and notch some interesting tracks up, like the singles “Dear Sir” and “This is What You All Came For”. She plays an electronic indie-folk which alternates spoken parts to an ethereal voice that remind us of Naoko Sasaki (Piana).

Passando da un LP indie folk ad un altro arriviamo a “Like the tide” l’album di debutto di Sun Tailor, ovvero Arnon Naor, musicista di Tel Aviv che, come molti altri nomi presenti in questo articolo, dopo aver vissuto per qualche tempo a Londra è tornato a Tel Aviv per dare vita al suo progetto solista.
Se i punti di riferimento più immediati sono certamente Nick Drake e Jose Gonzalez, la personalità di Arnon emerge brano dopo brano ed ha il suo zenith nel singolo Fay di cui vi consigliamo la visione del videoclip, la cui fotografia deve molto all’eleganza di “In the mood for love” di Wong Kar-Wai.

Speaking about indie-folk LPs, we get to “Like the Tide” debut album by Sun Taylor, also known as Arnon Naor, musician from Tel Aviv who, like some more names mentioned in this piece, lived in London for a while and is now back to Tel Aviv to give birth to his solo project.
Although the clearer benchmark surely are Nick Drake and Jose Gonzales, Arnon’s personality emerges track after track reaching its Zenith in the single “Fay”.
We also suggest the view of its videoclip, which cinematography owes much to the elegance of “In the Mood for Love” by Wong Kar-Wai.

Le Echo Bench sono un gruppo noise pop / noise rock israeliano formato da 3 ragazze di Tel Aviv, arrivate al debutto con un LP autoprodotto, rilanciato dall’italiana V4V Records lo scorso settembre. Liriche melanconiche che vengono urlate a stento dalla voce di Noga Shatz, mentre la sua chitarra costruisce mura di suono e gli altri strumenti giocano ad accelerare i battiti del cuore. Una prima prova molto interessante anche se con ampi margini di miglioramento. E, se a differenza di altri non possono vantare un largo interesse della stampa, senza dubbio il contributo di Colin Newman dei Wire al progetto è un marchio di garanzia.

Echo Bench is a israeli noise pop / noise rock band formed by 3 girls from Tel Aviv, that recently released their first self-released LP, promoted by the italian redord label V4V Records.
While Noga Shatz softly yell melancholy lyrics out, her guitar layers walls of sound, and the other instruments play with the beat of heart.
A good debut with room for improvement, that wasn’t widely covered by the press, but the Colin Newman remix of one of their songs is a hallmark of quality.

Questo speciale deve molto ad artisti e critici israeliani che ci hanno consigliato altre band interessanti. Non tutte hanno trovato spazio in questo articolo (per esempio Flora and 3421), ma senza dubbio continueremo a proporvene di tanto in tanto.
