JOURNEY THROUGH HELL

ENGLISH

In your new album “Requiem For Hell” you dealt with a masterpiece such as The Divine Comedy: how did you came with the idea of this concept? By the way Go Nagai did the same kind of work in 1994, did you ever tried to read his comic and listening to your album at the same time? It’s mind blowing!

When I finished writing the basis for the new album, I stumbled upon “Divine Comedy”. After reading the book, it felt like all the roads opened up suddenly. All the pieces suddenly came together like a jigsaw puzzle and created one world. (I also read Go Nagai’s manga.)

I was also fascinated by the story — going through afterlife; Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven, and I felt very empathetic towards the theme of soul’s salvation. On top of it all, I ended up really liking how the story was, in fact, a grand poetry written for love, towards one woman.

I personally live my life every day thinking “we only have limited times in our lives”. Things you can only take to your afterlife are beloved, positive memories; not your rank or honour. I think this really is the true wealth that will forever stay with you, give you strength, and continue to shine your path.

For the album cover, we used Gustave Doré’s illustration from “Divine Comedy”‘s last scene. At the end of the album, I want the listeners to wonder and feel what awaits at the end of pure white vortex for the two characters.

While in your previous work you discovered a new side of your sound, in Requiem For Hell it seems like you are going back to your roots and try to close the loop with your past. Is that true? And is this why you chose again Steve Albini as your Virgilio on this trip?

For this album, I really wanted to leave the sound as a band, as a group who had been together for 17 years. I was picturing something simple and organic, with no unnecessary elements, and leave the burning chemistry between 4 of us as our 9th album. From those feelings, I started to want to record with Steve Albini once again. The last time we recorded with him was in 2007, for “Hymn To The Immortal Wind”.

Recording session started in March this year, at Electrical Audio in Chicago, which is Steve’s studio. Like all the other times, we did a live recording of us 4. Traditional ways of recording may be the most difficult way, but if everything goes as planned, we will be able to leave a miracle-like take hence we always chose to do it this way. We always use analogue tapes for recordings as well, so we will be able to leave every single screaming of our souls that you can’t simply fit in digital formats. Steve Albini is a magician when it comes to analogue tapes. With no doubt, he captures everything perfectly from our air shaking sounds as a band, to our emotions, feelings, and even our wordless communications between us 4 during the performance. We think he’s truly the best engineer there is for this.

Even though it has been a long time, I was reminded that he’s the best understanding person for MONO’s music once again.

How did you ended up touring with Alcest? What do you think about their new album “Kodama”? And what should your italian fans expect about your november’s tour?
[the interview was made in october just before the european tour with Alcest; editor’s note]

We’ve been getting requests from Alcest how they’d like to tour together for a long time. We’re excited to be able to make this opportunity come true. Their worldview is beautiful and I like that, especially the singer’s delicacy.

We hope to do our own performance; spiritual, violent, yet beautiful, strong and fierce.

Eravamo eccitati all’idea che ciò potesse accadere.

Let’s talk about “Journey Through Hell”. How did you came with this idea and what kind of documentary will it be?

We just thought about simply leaving some sort of a memory. I recently saw the full version and our long-time heroes such as Steve Albini and Jeremy DeVine talk about MONO, and it made me extremely happy. There were some stories that I almost forgot about. The overall content was wonderful. I was reminded of how we’re here now because of them.

What does the future hold for Mono? Are you already working on something new?

We just finished our first “Requiem For Hell” Tour in China. In a few days, we’ll be starting our long European Tour, and we’re planning to tour Asia and North America next year.

There are no concrete plans other than that at the moment. We’re just focusing on each show.
