Intervista ai //TENSE//

Usciti da poco con un nuovo Ep sotto l’italiana Mannequin Records, facciamo due chiacchiere  con Robert, fondatore del progetto //TENSE//, tra early EBM e sfumature industrial, per un connubio dark dance che promette di farsi sentire sempre di più nel circuito underground americano e non solo.

Qual è la vostra storia?
Quanto vuoi che andiamo indietro? Non voglio annoiarti terribilmente con troppi dettagli, diciamola così… nell’inverno del 2006 decisi di iniziare a lavorare su quella forma grezza che sarebbe diventato il sound dei //TENSE//. Non sentivo niente nel Nord America a quel tempo che riempisse il  vuoto lasciatomi dalla Wax Track! (storico negozio ed etichetta dedicata alla new wave e post punk -produssero i Ministry, Front 242, Coil, Laibach etc). Così decisi di provare il meglio che potessi fare. Ci volle un paio d’anni per sciogliere i nodi decisivi, ma tra 2008 e 2009 ho cominciato veramente a sfornare la musica che volevo!.

Qual è la tua idea di musica e arte? quale è l’arte che ti piace?E che cosa ti ha influenzato di più musicalmente?
L’arte che mi piace? Veramente una domanda troppo vaga!… Penso che la mia estetica personale sia ben riflessa dalla musica che produco, e dall’artwork che presento al pubblico. Prendo parte ad ogni aspetto dei //TENSE//, dalla produzione musicale, all’ album art, fino alla produzione delle magliette, mi faccio venire idee e chiedo ad amici talentuosi ad aiutarmi a fare cose che io non so fare. Mi è sempre piaciuta la tensione “oscura” della musica, del cinema e dell’arte: film dell’orrore anni ’80, industrial, HR Giger, Patrick Nagel, Terminator, Predator, Blade Runner.. tanto per capirci.
Ogni cosa è arte, tutto è soggettivo, io non sono un critico ma un fan.
Musicalmente parlando, sicuramente un ruolo centrale l’hanno avuto: la Waxtrax! Records, Cabaret Voltaire, Soft Cell, Adrian Sherwood, le compilation delle superiori, i dischi di mio cugino: punk hardcore e colonne sonore anni ’80…
Per la letteratura invece direi William Gibson, Ray Bradbury…. e tanti altri.

Da cosa prende nome la tua band?
Dal mio cervello. Sono irascibile ed ho spesso mal di testa. E’ come sono.

Come descriveresti i tuoi lavori? la tua maniera di comporre e la tua idea di suono?
Dark dance music. Tutto inizia con il beat e il basso. Ho usato hardware, software, pentole e tegami, non me ne frega niente di che cosa uso per raggiungere il suono che voglio, basta che sia buono il risultato.

Come descriveresti  il contesto musicale?
Il Contesto? Penso che la musica rifletti cosa sto pensando al momento e la maniera in cui vedo il mondo. È un mondo fottuto quello che in cui viviamo, non possiamo più cantare canzoni sulla spiaggia e  il sole.

Com’è nata la collaborazione con la Mannequin Records, l’etichetta italiana?
Eravamo comuni fan del lavoro di un altro artista. Abbiamo cominciato a consocerci su FB e ho apprezzato tantissimo i lavori che Alessandro (direttore\fondatore Mannequin) produceva. Prende il suo tempo per realizzare ogni singolo disco, ma questo si riflette nella sua definitiva qualità.

So che avete contribuito alla compilation ISVOLT. Qualcuno ha detto che potrebbe essere considerata come un piccolo manifesto della Witchouse, che cosa ne pensate e dove vi posizionate in riferimento alle altre band del disco, come Modern Witch, Raw Moans etc?
Io non posso sinceramente rapportarmi con molti degli artisti associati al sound Witch House, ne conosco alcuni e riconosco interessanti le loro idee. Mi piaccio abbastanza i Modern Witch ma non credo che loro siano troppo “dentro” il sound Witch House. Sono stato amico di Robert Disaro (fondatore della Disaro rec. Etichetta che ha rilasciato il disco ISVOLT nda), e mi ha chiesto di contribuire alla compilation. Ero felice della richiesta ed ho contribuito, anche se i //TENSE// stavano in disparte rispetto al suono degli altri gruppi… sono solo etichette, chi se ne frega dopotutto?

Quali sono i tuoi piani per il futuro, quali sono le direzioni verso cui la tua musica si evolverà?
Spero di evolvere, certamente. Non voglio rimanere lo stesso e produrre la stessa musica ancora e ancora. Se ascolti la traccia “Memory” dall’ultimo EP (rilasciato da Mannequin nda), puoi ben sentire un nuovo cambiamento.  Ascolto tantissima musica, elettronica e non , e ho tantissime idee verso cui spingere il progetto nel futuro.

Hi, What is your story?
How far back do you want to go? I won’t bore you terribly with too many details, so here’s the edited version:
In the winter of 2006 I decided to start working on some rough sketches for what would become the //TENSE// sound. I wasn’t hearing anything in North America at the time that was filling my WaxTrax! void, so I decided to try my best. It definitely took a couple of years for me to work out the kinks, but in 2008 and 2009 I really started cranking out the tunes!

What is your idea of music and art nowadays? what is the art you like and why?
The ‘art’ I like? That is a very vague question… I think that my personal aesthetic is very well reflected in the music and album artwork I present to the public. I take part in every aspect of //TENSE//, from the music production, to the album art to the t-shirts, I come up with the ideas for everything and then ask talented friends to help me do the things I can’t. I have always enjoyed the darker strains of music/movies/art: 80s horror movies, 80s industrial/electro, HR Gieger, Patrick Nagel, Terminator, Predator, Blade Runner…you get the idea…
Everything is art, it is all subjective, I am not a critic, I am a fan.

Who\what did influenced you the most musically?
Again, I think this is obvious: WaxTrax! Records, Cabaret Voltaire, Soft Cell, Adrian Sherwood, highschool mix-tapes, my older cousin in the 80s, hardcore punk, 80s horror movie soundtracks…

On the other hand, who are the other artists you like? i’m talking about literature, photography, cinema…
I have always enjoyed the darker strains of music/movies/art: 80s horror movies, 80s industrial/electro, HR Gieger, Patrick Nagel, Terminator, Predator, Blade Runner, Helmut Newton, William Gibson, Guy Bourdin, Ray Bradbury, George Romero, Fabio Frizzi, Dario Argento, John Carpenter, Terence Koh, Rad Hourani, oh boy this could go on forever…

Where did you get your band name from?
From my brain. I have a short temper and often have stress headaches. It’s the way I am.

How would you describe your works? your way of composition, your idea of sound
Dark dance music. Everything starts with the beat and the bass. I have used hardware/software/pots and pans, I don’t give a shit what you use as long as it sounds good.

How would you describe the musical context?
The context? I think that my music reflects what I am thinking at the time and the way I see the world. It’s a fucked up world we live in, we can’t all sing songs about the beach and the sunshine!

How is born the collaboration with Mannequin Records?
We were mutual fans of one anothers work. I believe we started talking on Facebook and I really love the product that Alessandro releases. He takes his time with every release and that is definitely reflected in the quality of his work.

I know you have contributed to the compilation ISVOLT. Someone said it could be considered as a little manifesto of Witchouse, what do you think about it and where do you position yourself in comparison with the other bands of the LP: Modern Witch, Raw Moans and etc?
I can’t really relate to many of the artists associated with the ‘Witch House’ sound, but I know a few and think some of the ideas are interesting. I like Modern Witch quite a bit, but I don’t think they are too stuck in the ‘Witch House’ sound. I have been friends with Robert Disaro and he asked me to be on the Isvolt compilation. I was flattered and took part in it gladly. Obviously //TENSE// stands apart from the rest of that compilation, it’s all labels, who cares?

What are your plans for the future? are your music going to evolve to new directions?
I hope to evolve, of course! I don’t want to stay the same and release the same record over and over. I think if you listen from ‘Memory’ until the new ep you can definitely hear a progression. I listen to many strains of electronic music and I have many other emotions and ideas that I hope to express in the future.
