MeglioDelSesso #1: intervista a CARLA BOZULICH

megliodelsesso

Lasciami provare: “I just wanna “fuck up the whole world” vuol dire distruggere il mondo intero, o almeno “danneggiarlo” o “metterlo in imbarazzo” oppure senza ragione—-“give it trouble just for being alive”.

ENG:

When you listen to a record a lot, you definitely feel like wanting to ask the composer many questions, especially if you have the strong impression that their music comes from a strong mental and phisical effort and that somebody is dying in every note.
I listened to “Boy”, that Carla Bozulich calls a “pop record”, for the whole first week of 2014, when I knew I had to let everything change, in my life. “Boy” is a tangle of raw sounds put together by a sadistic woman who’s tearing everything apart, a maniac who keeps on inviting you to listen to her, but not to follow her.
Well, that’s quite an intro. I don’t want to dissapoint you but the people I am not sadistic. It’s a big word. I’m digging my way out of anger that comes from seeing too many creatures suffer and that includes people who are sadistic or cruel. To watch what happens when they suffer is actually the worse—-for everyone. But I see why people hurt other people. Even though I can feel that inside I don’t act on it—–thus I’m not a sadist.

Carla, what events in your life prompt the writing of a new album?
Love, adventure, sending my dear friends who had not survived drugs and AIDS into a lighter place in my heart. Picture a boat set down the river in flames.

You wrote and recorded “Boy” entirely by yourself. Would you like to describe your average day while recording?
I actually did not do all the writing. I wrote a good 75% but what John Eichenseer and Andrea belfi added was the difference between good and great.

I’ve recently read an interview where you said that music is the only way to be “inexistent”. Can you explain it better?
If you can do a really good job and go all the way with your art you get that present—–you get to dissapear for even just a moment—–you do not see or know yourself and you do not care about anything.

Tell me about your album cover. What’s the concept?
The horse is in a festival of exploding stars. He’s dancing and laughing and calling out to the lucky snakes surrounding the moon. YOu can’t see the snakes because the paper was pretty small.

What are you listening to, at the moment?
Children outside the window screaming in Italian.

How many times did you change everything in your life?
That’s a very very good question. You win something for that. Go tell the first person you see that you want to give them what’s in your pocket. That’s what you won. I’ve changed EVERYTHING completely many times ever since I had the power and hair dye to leave one place and go to another. So 13 years old until now. BUt it’s not important to be this way as long as you have room for all the things you end up with in the end.

Carla, I’ve got the strong feeling you wanna have sex with the whole world. Am I right?
Well, I suppose it’s impossible to explain this in Europe. Let me try: “I just wanna ” fuck up” the whole world” means to “destroy” the whole world, or at least to “damage” it or “embarrass” it or for no reason—– “give it trouble just for being alive”. It’s a hard lyric to explain, even to people who speak American slang. It’s a shitty thing to say but it is understood as some other kind of voice. So no….. that’s exactly the opposite. Still, I’ll adapt to people thinking I want to fuck the whole world. I certainly want to fuck at least half the world before I kill them.
