Intervista ai DYNFARI

Fin che la barca va, stai a guardare, quando il Metallo viene il campanello suonerà.
Abbiamo lasciato navigare la nostra barca redazionale fino a giungere in Islanda, terra di eremiti, disagio e natura incontaminata. Tra queste lande abbiamo intervistato i Dynfari che da poco hanno rilasciato per Code666 il disco Vegferð Tímans (clicca qui per la nostra recensione). Una tempesta blackster da non poter lasciare indifferenti.

Ciao ragazzi come va la vita in Islanda? Siete soddisfatti del vostro Vegferð Tímans e del successo di critica che sta riscuotendo?
Ciao! Stiamo per arrivare (si spera!) alla fine di uno degli inverni più lunghi e duri della storia recente d’Islanda. Si è arrivati al punto che si sta considerando il fatto di dargli un nome. Stiamo ancora soffrendo a causa di un governo con complessi autocratici, gli stessi partiti politici che hanno posto le basi della crisi economica. I poveri diventano più poveri, i ricchi diventano più ricchi.
Ci sono anche dei pro: la scena musica sta sbocciando. Stiamo assistento ad una quantità di release black metal come mai abbiamo visto prima. Il nostro nuovo album Vegferð Tímans sta ricevendo recensioni perlopiù fantastiche, oltre le nostre aspettative. Le poche recensioni che non sono proprio positive le abbiamo ricevute da persone che sembra stessero aspettando un album di black metal furioso. Questo album non lo è, anche se alcuni passaggi lo sono. Siamo molto soddisfatti riguardo l’accoglienza che ha ricevuto.

Come è nata l’idea di creare un concept sullo scorrere del tempo e sulle stagioni della vita?
Bella domanda… prima di tutto, quelle liriche sono state scritte separatamente dalla musica. Sono state adattate, ripensate e leggermente modificate per adeguarsi alle composizioni musicali. L’ispirazione è arrivata da un sacco di cose ed è difficile definire con precisione una di queste in particolare. Pensieri, discussioni profonde, esperienze musicali intense, cercare di capire la realtà facendo un esame approfondito del contesto: questi sono alcuni degli elementi che hanno scatenato il bisogno di creare ed esprimersi, dando il significato alle nostre creazioni musicali.

Ho difficoltà a scegliere la canzone migliore del disco perchè trovo Vegferð Tímans un disco molto solido e ben studiato. Voi siete legati a qualche canzone in particolare? Come nascono le vostra creazioni?
Grazie. A quanto pare non sei il solo. Neanche noi riusciamo a scegliere una canzone preferita. Ogni brano è bello perché ha un suo motivo per essere degno di nota. Crediamo che siamo riusciti a creare un album così per intero. Potremmo essere faziosi quando si tratta di preferire canzoni ad altre che magari non avremmo mai scelto come nostre favorite, anche perché alcune canzoni sono diventate già vecchie per noi. Alcune sono diventate punti fissi dei nostri live, come ad esempio Hafsjór e Óreiða. Altre ancora sono invece difficili da proporre con una formazione di 4 elementi, come ad esempio Vegferð II – Ad Astra.
Ci siamo incontrati con una idea e una struttura di base del brano già in testa, poi abbiamo lavorato sui dettagli durante le prove. Molte idee hanno visto la luce così ma anche registrando delle demo. Solitamente le parti vocali e i testi sono l’ultimo pezzo del puzzle.

Come nasce la collaborazione con la Code666? Su Indiegogo c’è un crowdfunding per la stampa del vinile. Cosa ne pensate dei questo sistema di autofinanziamento?
Abbiamo iniziato a collaborare nel 2012, quando stavamo inviando i nostri demo e i rough mix di Sem Skugginn. Abbiamo avuto le offerte di diverse label, ma quella di Code666 era la più grande. Abbiamo deciso di lavorare con loro ancora per Vegferð Tímans. Ci piace l’idea dietro al concetto di crowdfunding, è un buon modo di capire se c’è richiesta di certe innovazioni. Questo significa anche c’è meno rischio nel lancio di progetti come questi.

Spotify, Youtube, Bandcamp ma anche rinascita delle produzioni su cassetta e vinile. Il mercato musicale è molto instabile in questi anni. Voi vi siete fatti un’idea su come sta andando il tutto?
Bandcamp è un ottimo modo per gli artisti piccoli o indipendenti che cercano di rendere la loro musica accessibile in un modo carino sia per l’ascolto che per l’acquisto. Sporify comunque è fatto per i grandi artisti e il loro sistema di gestione delle royalty. È spaventoso, ecco perché non lo uso mai. YouTube è un modo molto comune di scoprire e condividere la musica anche se non è stato creato per questo scopo, al contrario di Bandcamp. Se è possibile, uso Bandcamp per scoprire la musica e condividere la mia ma capisco l’importanze e il potenziale di YouTube, ad esempio. Ecco perché lo utilizzo. Spotify lo evito come la peste.
Credo che il ritortno ai formati più vecchi sia molto comprensibile. Il vinile è sicuramente tra i formati più belli per distribuire la musica. È anche pieno di sentimenti nostalgici, così come la musicassetta! Alcuni lo preferiscono anche per come suona. Credo sia questione di gusti. I suoni sono molto soggettivi. Io ascolto principalmente musica in digitale e CD, ma mi piace molto il vinile e la nostalgia data delle musicassette è indubbia, secondo me.

Dell’Islanda, musicalmente parlando, conosciamo molto bene realtà come Sigur Ròs, Mùm, Bjork, Of Monster And Men (per citare gli interpreti più famosi), ma poco della scena più vicina alle vostre sonorità. Com’è la situazione della musica “pesante” in Islanda? Avete qualche altro da gruppo da consigliarci?
Come ho detto anche prima, c’è una scena islandese black metal molto attiva al momento. Se stai cercando qualcosa che possa andare nella nostra direzione, ti consiglio una band chiamata Auðn che ha appena pubblicato un nuovo album. C’è anche una band chiamata Shrine che nasce dalle ceneri dei Gone Postal. I Kontinuum condividono alcune influenze con noi e stanno per pubblicaare un nuovo disco. I Vintage Caravan stanno diventando molto famosi grazie al loro rock catcht. C’è sicuramente un sacco di attività nell’ambito della musica più heavy, in generale, dai più brutali ai più pacati.

Che dischi state ascoltando in questo periodo?
Sì, un sacco. Uno relativamente recente che è stato suonato di più è Clearing the Path to Ascend dei YOB. Album magnifico, sicuramente uno dei migliori del 2014. I This Will Destroy You sono un’altra band che viene ascoltata su basi regolari. Sono usciti con un disco nuovo l’anno scorso. Un sacco di nuove band stanno rilasciando roba nuova… è difficile starci dietro. A volte è bello anche scavare tra gli album di black metal e death metal più old school.

Ultima, classica, domanda: progetti per il futuro? C’è la possibilità di vedervi dal vivo qui in Italia?
Saremo negli States e in Canada per due mesi in autunno con i Negura Bunget. Chissà cosa porterà l’anno prossima. Sicuramente speriamo di tornare prestissimo in Europa e programmare un live in Italia è definitivamente una possibilità.

Hi guys! How’s life in Iceland? Are you satisfied about Vegferð Tímans’ critics success?
Hello! We are just about to (hopefully) see the end of one of the longest and harshest winter in recent history in Iceland. It’s to the point that it is being considered naming it. We are still suffering from a government with autocratic complexes, the same political parties that set the tone for the economic crisis. The poor are getting poorer and the rich are getting richer.
On the plus side, the music scene is blossoming. We are now seeing an amount of Icelandic black metal releases unlike anything before. Our new album Vegferð Tímans has gotten mostly fantastic reviews, beyond our expectations. The few reviews we have seen which are not so good seem to be from people who were expecting a furious black metal album. It is not, even though there are such passages within. We are very satisfied with the reception.

How the idea of a concept regarding the flow of time and the stages of life was born?
Good question… first of all, these poems were written separately from the music. They were adapted, rethought and slightly modified to fit the musical compositions. The inspiration is drawn from a lot of things and it’s hard to pinpoint any in particular. Thoughts, deep discussions, intense musical experiences, attempting to understand reality in some comprehensive context – these are some things that have sparked a need for creating and expressing, giving meaning to our musical creations.

I have some difficulties in picking the best song of the album: I think Vegferð Tímans is a really solid and well-thought album! Are you attached to a song in particular? How do you create your works?
Thank you, and you are not alone. We can’t pick a favourite song either. Each song is good on its own merits we think, and we believe we succeeded in making the album one whole as well. We may be biased when it comes to picking songs that would not make candidates for a favourite song as some of the songs are getting quite old to us now. Some have become staples of our live shows like Hafsjór and Óreiða while others are difficult to perform as a 4-piece, for example Vegferð II – Ad Astra.We meet with a basic song idea and structure in mind and work out the details at rehearsal. A lot of ideas come to light there and also in making demos. The vocals and lyrics are usually the last piece of the puzzle

How the collaboration with Code666 started? There is a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo for the vinyl release as well w:hat do you think about this self-financing system?
We started collaborating in 2012 when we were sending out demos/rough mixes of Sem Skugginn. We got offers from a couple of labels and Code666 had the biggest offer. We decided to work with them again for Vegferð Tímans. We like the idea behind the crowdfunding concept as it’s a good way to find out about if there is demand for certain innovations. That means that there is less risk involved in launching projects such as these.

Spotify, YouTube, Bandcamp but also the coming back of releases on music tapes and vinyl: music industry and its market are pretty unstable nowadays. What is your personal idea on how this situation is going?
Bandcamp is a great way for small or independent artists to get their music accessible in a nice format for listening and purchasing. Spotify however is made for big artists and their royalty system is nothing short of abysmal which is why I never use it. YouTube is a common way to discover and share music even though it isn’t really created for that purpose, unlike Bandcamp. If I possibly can, I use Bandcamp to discover music and share mine but I realize the importance and potential of for example YouTube so I use it as well. Spotify I avoid like the plague.  I think the return to older formats of materializing music is very understandable. Vinyl is definitely among the most beautiful format to release music on. It also has plenty of nostalgia to it, as the tape cassette also does. Some people also like it because of how it sounds. I think that’s a matter of personal preference. Sounds are extremely subjective to opinion. I personally listen mostly to digital or CDs but I really enjoy the vinyl format and the nostalgia of the tape cassette is unquestionable in my mind.

We know some icelandic music acts really well: Sigur Ròs, Mùm, Bjork, Of Monster And Men (naming the most famous ones), but we don’t know a lot about the scene similar to your sonorities. What about the situation of “heavy” music in Iceland? Which other band would you like to suggest to us?
As I mentioned in a previous answer, there is a very active Icelandic black metal scene right now. If you are looking for something more in our direction I can recommend to you a band called Auðn which just released a new album recently. There’s also a band called Shrine which rose from the ashes of Gone Postal. Kontinuum shares some similar influences as us, they’re releasing a new album. The Vintage Caravan is gaining a lot of success with their catchy rock. There is definitely a lot of activity in heavy Icelandic music on the whole spectrum, from the most brutal to the more mellow.

Have you been listening to some records in particular lately? Which one?
Yes, lots. One relatively recent one which has been spun regularly is Clearing the Path to Ascend by YOB. A magnificent album, a definite highlight of 2014. This Will Destroy You is another band that gets playtime on a regular basis, they had a new album last year. A lot of good bands are releasing new albums and it’s getting hard to keep up. Sometimes it’s also nice to drop the needle on some old school death metal or black metal albums.

Last – and inevitable! – question: what about your future projects? Is there any possibility to see you live in Italy?
We are touring United States and Canada for two months this fall with Negura Bunget. Who knows what will follow next year. We sure hope to be back on tour in Europe soon enough and planning a show in Italy is definitely a possibility.
