Sempre pronti a nuove sfide: intervista ai Quicksand

I Quicksand sono tornati alla carica e lo hanno fatto con il botto, ovvero il loro nuovo album “Distant Populations“, firmato Epitaph Records (qui la nostra recensione). Per la band post-hc di New York, tornata in scena 4 anni fa con “Interiors” dopo ben 22 anni di silenzio, si tratta di più di una conferma. “Distant Populations” è un disco che va dritto al sodo e che, senza fare passi indietro, offre all’ascoltatore diversi scossoni. Ne abbiamo approfittato per scambiare quattro chiacchiere con loro.

Ciao ragazzi, è un grandissimo piacere fare questa intervista con voi. Come state?

Stiamo bene grazie, molto eccitati per l’uscita dell’album.

Parto subito chiedendovi… Musicalmente parlando, come avete vissuto questo periodo particolare? È stato controproducente oppure vi ha aiutato a chiarire meglio le idee su quello che fare?

È stato a dir poco interessante. Come un po tutti, ci sono state delle difficoltà, ma sento che siamo riusciti a utilizzare il tempo in modo molto produttivo. Abbiamo dedicato più attenzione ai dettagli più di quanto forse non avremmo fatto senza una pandemia

Ci credo! Innanzitutto, complimenti per “Distant Populations”, sul vostro ultimo album ci arriveremo dopo. Questo è il vostro quarto lavoro, sesto se vogliamo contare anche gli EP “Quicksand” e “Tryptic Continuum”. Dal 1990 fino ad ora vi siete evoluti tantissimo per quanto riguarda le sonorità e sperimentazioni. È stato un cambiamento spontaneo oppure siete stati spinti da qualcosa?

Grazie mille, sin dal nostro inizio abbiamo sempre voluto essere una band che guardasse in avanti. In molti modi ogni disco è una reazione all’ultimo, vogliamo andare oltre e sorprenderci.8 Siamo tutti molto felici e orgogliosi di questo disco, per le possibilità che abbiamo colto e per l’evoluzione “se così si può dire” del nostro sound.

Com’è stato il processo di lavorazione di “Distant Populations”? Quali sono state le soddisfazioni e le difficoltà che avete incontrato in questo lavoro?

Sai, ci sono sempre momenti in cui non sei sicuro di quale sia la strada da prendere quando scrivi una canzone. Facciamo gioco di squadra ora, e siamo diventati bravi nello sviluppare il tutto, quindi le difficoltà sono più facili da risolvere. Ad essere onesti, ci siamo divertiti molto a lavorare su questo disco, eravamo davvero eccitati

Ho avuto il piacere di ascoltare l’album in anteprima. Rispetto ad “Interiors” l’ho trovato più diretto ed incisivo, ma non solo! L’introspezione non manca mai, che è una piccola vostra aggiunta che apprezzo molto nei vostri brani. Sapete spiegarmi questa scelta?

Grazie di cuore. Dopo essere tornati con Interiors abbiamo avuto l’opportunità di svilupparci ancora una volta come band.  Dopo il tour suddiviso in tre pezzi siamo stati fermi per parecchio, poi quando siamo tornati abbiamo avuto più fiducia in questa registrazione. Volevamo che questo disco fosse più immediato e diretto, ma che ampliasse anche ciò che abbiamo fatto con Interiors.

Nel corso di questi vent’anni come è cambiato il vostro approccio di scrivere e lavorare sulla musica?

Ci sono alcuni approcci e trucchi che apprendi lungo la strada che possono ravvivare una canzone qua e là, ma la cosa divertente della musica, specialmente quando si lavora con una squadra è che ci sono sempre nuove sfide. La cosa bella della registrazione invece, è che congela la tua sensibilità musicale col tempo, e inevitabilmente sarai sempre da qualche altra parte. È come la marea che sale in spiaggia, è sempre una spiaggia ma mai uguale

Anche i vostri ascolti sono cambiati?

Sicuro! Però non sono orgoglioso del fatto che tendo ad ascoltare più le canzoni che gli album. Trovo che l’album sia la forma d’arte più importante, costruire un gruppo di canzoni attorno a quel concetto è senza tempo per me, quindi quando un artista cattura veramente la mia attenzione mi prendo il tempo per ascoltare l’intero album in sequenza. Questo è ciò che porta davvero un artista nel mio cuore.

In questo momento molte band e artisti temporaneamente stanno adottando il metodo di fare live in streaming, qual è il vostro pensiero a riguardo?

Al momento non abbiamo piani per questo, ma penso che sia una buona cosa, purtroppo questa pandemia è andata avanti troppo a lungo per non cercare alternative ai concerti dal vivo. Sicuramente è una cosa strana e un’esperienza molto diversa e i fan spero lo capiscano. È anche una sfida per la band renderla sia interessante che suonare bene in quelle circostanze, quindi ammiro le band che possono farcela.

Qual è il vostro punto di forza? Cos’è che vi tiene ancora uniti dopo tutti questi anni?

Abbiamo una chimica molto naturale che permette a tutti noi di essere presenti, sappiamo come illuminarci a vicenda e lavorare come una squadra. La cosa più bella e  importante è che ci piace lavorare insieme sulla musica in modo che l’obiettivo comune ci mantenga concentrati su dove vogliamo arrivare.

Il mio carissimo amico Marco, che è un vostro grandissimo fan vi dice un enorme GRAZIE!… In conlusione, grazie mille per questa chiacchierata. Dopo “Distant Populations” avete altri progetti in mente?

Fantastico! per favore saluta tanto il tuo amico. Sicuramente adesso la cosa importante è suonare, anche dal vivo, con un po’ di fortuna ci incontreremo in Italia ad uno spettacolo l’anno prossimo. È stato un piacere parlare con te, grazie di cuore davvero.

Hi guys, it is a great pleasure to do this interview with you. How are you?

I’m well thanks, very excited for the album to be released.

I leave immediately wondering … Musically speaking, how did you live this particular period? Was it counterproductive or did it help you to clarify your ideas about what to do?

It’s been interesting to say the least. Like everyone there’s been struggles but I feel that we managed to use the time productively. We spent more attention to detail than perhaps we would have without a pandemic.

First of all, congratulations on “Distant Populations”, on your latest album we’ll get to that later.  This is your fourth work, sixth if we want to also count the EPs “Quicksand” & “Tryptic Continuum”.  From 1990 until now you have evolved a lot in terms of sounds and experiments. Was it a spontaneous change or were you pushed by something?

Thank you, since our inception we always wanted to be a forward moving band. In many ways each record is a reaction to the last, we want to go further and surprise ourselves. We’re all very proud of this record for the chances we took and the evolution of our sound.

How was the manufacturing process of “Distant Populations”?  What were the satisfactions and difficulties you encountered on this album?

There’s always moments where you’re not sure which way to go with a song but we’ve gotten good at developing ways through as a team, so the difficulties are easier to solve. To be honest we had a lot of fun working on this record, we were excited from the jump. 

I had the pleasure of listening to the album in preview.  Compared to “Interiors” I found it more direct and incisive, but not only!  Introspection never fails, which is a small addition of yours that I really appreciate in your songs. Can you explain this choice to me?

Thank you. After coming back with Interiors we had the opportunity to develop as a band once again. After touring as a three piece we got very tight and adept musically so we had more confidence going into this recording. We wanted this record to be more immediate and direct but also expand on what we started with Interiors.

How was the manufacturing process of “Distant Populations”?  What were the satisfactions and difficulties you encountered on this album?

There’s certain approaches and tricks you pick up along the way that can spice up a song here and there but the fun thing about music, especially when working with a team is that there’s always new challenges, it’s always new. The cool thing about recording is that it freezes your musical sensibility in time, inevitably you’ll be someplace else in time. It’s like the tide coming in at the beach, it’s still a beach but never the same.

Have listening to music changed too? 

For sure, I’m not proud that I tend to listen to songs more than albums, it’s a product of having so many choices. That said, I still find the album as the most important artform, to build a group of songs around that concept is timeless to me, so when an artist truly catches my attention I will take the time to listen to the entire album in sequence. That’s what really brings an artist into my heart.

Right now many bands and artists are temporarily adopting the method of doing live streaming, what are your thoughts on this?

We don’t currently have plans for one but I think it’s a good thing, this pandemic has gone on too long not to seek out alternatives to live concerts. Of coarse it’s a very different experience but the fan understands that. It’s also a challenge for the band to make it interesting and to play well under that circumstance so I admire bands that can pull it off.

What is your strong point? What is it that still holds you together after all these years?

We have a very natural chemistry that allows all of us to be featured, we know how to shine a light on eachother and work as a team. Most importantly we enjoy working on music together so that common goal keeps us focused.
