La furia incandescente di Belfast non si placa: intervista ai Chalk

Nati tra le mura della Queen’s University Belfast, i Chalk sono uno dei tanti nuovi e interessanti esponenti della scena post-punk d’Oltremanica. Il loro Ep di debutto “Conditions” (qui la nostra recensione), uscito a maggio su Dutch Tilt, mette bene in mostra le coordinate sonore del progetto, che unisce alle ormai classiche sonorità post-punk elementi di elettronica e noise rock. Li abbiamo incontrati.

Quindi, raccontatemi qualcosa riguardo “Conditions”, il vostro EP di debutto. Com’è nata l’idea? E il risultato finale vi soddisfa?

“Conditions” è nato con l’uscita del nostro primo singolo Them. Abbiamo avuto quel pezzo nascosto in tasca per un periodo e volevamo tirare fuori qualcosa. Non era in programma di scrivere o realizzare un EP finché Them è uscito fuori, grazie al supporto ricevuto sia prima che durante la realizzazione, e così l’EP è nato conseguentemente. Per tutti i membri della band, sarebbe stato il primo lavoro musicale ad essere mai stato realizzato, perciò c’erano discussioni sul materiale da proporre. Ma siamo contenti di come alla fine sia venuto fuori, i pezzi erano nelle nostre vite da ormai un bel po’ di tempo ed è stato fantastico come la critica abbia accolto Them.

Com’ è stato lavorare con il produttore Chris Ryan? E perché avete scelto proprio lui?

Lavorare con Chris è stato molto divertente. Abbiamo trovato il metodo e il felling giusti nella produzione/registrazione del materiale. C’era una connessione tra i nostri obiettivi, cioè su come volevamo fosse una canzone, e gli input che lui dava. Era una scelta chiara sin dall’inizio, quando volevamo registrare Them. Lui ha lavorato e lavora tuttora con diversi artisti interessanti della scena, per cui eravamo eccitatissimi ancor prima di iniziare.

Come nasce una canzone dei Chalk?

Quasi tutte le canzoni iniziano con Logic Pro-x. Creo un loop iniziale a cui vado ad aggiungere quanti più suoni possibile che mi sembrano giusti. Da lì inizia a formarsi un tono/stato d’animo e poi registro alcune parti di voce che mi vengono in mente. Una volta che ci sono i primi componenti, viene creata la prima composizione, dopodiché ci riuniamo e ci avviciniamo al tema della traccia. A tutti noi piace lavorare insieme sui testi, modificando il lavoro dell’altro e trovando lo scopo della traccia. A volte arriva prima il titolo della canzone e lo stesso titolo può poi illuminare la direzione da prendere con la traccia.

Ci sono molte influenze nel vostro EP. Ho letto che due degli album a cui vi siete più ispirati sono “Viet Cong” dei Preoccupations e “The Agent Intellect” dei Protomartyr. Adoro entrambe le band. Credo voi abbiate il vostro personale e originale modo di rivisitare quello che è già stato fatto con quei due grandi album. Ci sono altre band a cui vi ispirate?

Tendiamo a prendere ispirazione da realtà attuali, tra i nostri preferiti ci sono i Mandy, Indiana e gli Special Interest. A modo proprio, stanno rinnovando il modo di fare musica elettronica e non, ed è entusiasmante vedere come ci stanno arrivando. Joe Casey dei Protomartyr è stata per me una grande ispirazione vocale.

Vi definirei come una band non convenzionale del panorama post-punk che proviene dall’Irlanda, con sprazzi di elettronica, dance, techno, dark. Come vi definireste, invece, voi?

Direi che è tutto giusto, ma non vorremmo incasellarci dentro un genere musicale. Nonostante siamo stati descritti come una band ‘Berghain-rock’ e ci piace.

Quali sono le vostre canzoni preferite dell’EP? Ci sono tracce che amate di più, magari per le storie che hanno dietro?

Conditions è una traccia incredibile, che spicca, per noi. Racchiude tutte le emozioni e tutti gli argomenti attraversati nel corso dell’intero EP. Era un’idea che avevamo in testa da almeno 2 anni e siamo stati capaci di dargli un senso lavorando in studio con Chris. Static è un’altra traccia che inserirei tra le nostre preferite perché abbiamo lavorato insieme sul testo con particolare dedizione e attenzione, e in più è stata la mia preferita da registrare.

La realtà live è per voi molto importante. Ora siete (mentre scrivo) in un mini tour che tocca UK e Irlanda. Qual è il significato che date al suonare live i vostri pezzi, di fronte a tante altre persone?

Abbiamo appena concluso il nostro primo tour – il primo in maniera continuativa tra una data e l’altra, senza pause. Prima di questo avevamo suonato in pochissime altre date, per cui eravamo molto emozionati nel portare la nostra musica di fronte ad un pubblico diverso di volta in volta. Ci siamo divertiti un sacco ed è stato fantastico. Specialmente a Brighton al festival The Great Escape – è stata una delle prime volte in cui abbiamo visto gente ballare e saltare mentre noi suonavamo.

Ultimo ma non ultimo, quali sono i vostri futuri progetti? Sto aspettando un vostro album e un mini tour tutto italiano!

Italia presto, al 100%. Registreremo il nostro prossimo EP a luglio e uscirà prossimamente.

So, tell me something about “Conditions”, your debut EP. How did the idea start in your minds? And does the final result satisfy you?

The beginning of “Conditions” began with the release of our first single Them. We had the song in our back pockets for some time and just wanted to put something out there. There wasn’t any plans to write or release an EP at all when Them came out, I guess it came from the support we received for the track and us deciding to give writing an EP a go. It was going to be the first body of work each of us had ever released musically so there was discussions happening all the time with the material. We’re pleased with how it all turned out, the songs have been in our lives for some time and has been great to hear positive feedback on Them.

How’s been working with producer Chris Ryan? And why did you choose him?

It’s very fun! We’ve got a great system with Chris when producing/recording the material. There’s an understanding between what we want to achieve and any input he has on the music. It was a clear choice for us when we wanted to record ‘Them’. he’d worked with some acts that we love so it felt exciting when we began to work together.

How the idea of a song comes up in your minds?

The songs mostly begin on Logic Pro X. I’ll create a loop to begin with and add as many sounds as I can that feel right. From there a mood/tone begins to form and then I’d record a few vocal ideas. Once the first components are there, the first composition if created and then we come together and approach the the theme of the track. We all like to work together on the lyrics, sort of editing each others work and finding the purpose of the track. Sometimes the title comes at the very start and that can inspire an idea on where to go with the song.

There are a lot of influences in your EP. I read that two albums that have inspired you the most are “Viet Cong” by Preoccupations and “The Agent Intellect” by Protomartyr. I’m in love with both bands. I think you have your own way to revisit what has been done with these two great albums. Are there any other bands that inspired you the most?

We tend to take inspiration from more contemporary acts, a few of our favourites right now are Mandy, Indiana & Special Interest. Each in their own regard re-structuring guitar and electronic music, it’s exciting to see how they’ve gone about it. Joe Casey from Protomatyr was a big inspiration for me personally on his vocal performance.

I would define you as a non-conventional post-punk Irish band, with glimpes of electro, dance, techno, dark. How would you define yourself?

I’d say they are all fair ways to describe us right now, but we wouldn’t like to pigeonhole ourselves into any genre at all. Although we were described as ‘Berghain-rock’ and enjoyed that.

What are your favourite songs of the EP? Or are there any songs that you love most, maybe for the process of making them or for the stories behind them?

Conditions is a stand out track for us. It sums up all the emotions and themes we explored on all the tracks on the whole EP. It was an idea that had beeb floating about for 2 years and we were able to make sense of it in the studio with Chris. Static is another one for me as we all worked closely on the lyrics and was a personal favourite to record.

Live shows are important to you. You’re now (while I’m writing) playing some shows around UK and Ireland. What’s the meaning, to you, of playing your music in front of other people in your own shows?

We just finished our first tour – it was the first time we’ve consecutively played shows one after the other. We’d only played a few shows beforehand so we were excited to bring the music to different crowds. It was amazing to play and we had a great time. Especially at the venue Chalk for The Great Escape – it was one of the first times we seen people dancing/jumping to our music.

Last but non least, what are your future projects? I’m personally waiting for an album and for a mini tour in Italy!
