Non siamo rockstar: intervista ai Kvelertak

Giusto una settimana fa i norvegesi Kvelertak sono tornati in scena con il nuovo album “Endling” (qui la nostra recensione), un disco che conferma le sonorità sfoderate negli ultimi lavori, più vicini all’hard rock, ma che incorpora anche elementi del black metal e dell’hardcore degli esordi. Ne abbiamo parlato direttamente con Ivar Nikolaisen, frontman della band.

Ciao Ivar, benvenuto su Impatto Sonoro. Come state tu e la band?

Grazie! Io e la band stiamo benissimo. L’album è uscito e siamo orgogliosi di condividerlo con il mondo

Ho avuto il piacere di ascoltare “Endling” in anteprima. Rispetto a “Splid” ho trovato la sua alchimia molto più omogenea e diretta. Voi cosa ne pensate? Com’è stata la sua gestazione rispetto a “Splid”?

Forse. Ho sentito dire anche il contrario se devo essere sincero. Sembra che le persone interpretino “Endling” in tanti modi diversi.  Quindi non saprei. L’album è stato creato durante gli anni del Covid, il che ci ha permesso di concentrarci al 100% sulle nostre cose e di non avere molto altro da fare. I bar erano chiusi, gli amici non erano più disponibili come prima e, come tutti sappiamo, eravamo tutti prigionieri nelle nostre vite. Quando è arrivato il covid, eravamo stati solo due settimane in viaggio per promuovere “Splid” e ricordo che ci siamo ritrovati bloccati nel nostro Tour Bus fuori da un locale, tutto esaurito, a Monaco quando tutto ha chiuso. Siamo appena arrivati in Norvegia prima che le frontiere chiudessero e, come tutti gli altri, non c’era altro da fare che sedersi e aspettare per vedere cosa stava succedendo. Ovviamente siamo rimasti delusi dal momento che abbiamo dovuto cancellare la maggior parte dei nostri spettacoli quell’anno, ma siamo giunti abbastanza presto alla conclusione che avremmo trascorso il tempo in modo positivo. Abbiamo iniziato tutti a scrivere ed eravamo piuttosto concentrati. Ho trascorso la maggior parte del tempo nei boschi, ho incontrato persone interessanti che vivevano totalmente isolate dalla società e mi hanno ispirato a scrivere i testi che sono finiti in “Endling“. Invece su “Splid” tutto sembrava piuttosto affrettato e stressante. Questa volta non abbiamo dovuto affrettarci così tanto.

Alcuni fan pensano che stiate andando verso una direzione molto più rock, lasciando da parte il Black Metal dei primi tempi. Io credo che “Endling” sia un buon compromesso in quello che facevate al tempo e quello che state facendo tutt’ora. Un buon esempio può essere il brano “Døgeniktens Kvad”.

Non abbiamo mai intenzione di realizzare un “album rock” o un album “black metal”.  Scriviamo semplicemente canzoni e a volte finiscono per essere più morbide e a volte è un ritmo infernale. Døgeniktens Kvad è la canzone più pesante mai scritta da Kvelertak. Sia musicalmente che liricamente. Ma allo stesso tempo, la canzone Endling è probabilmente la cosa più vicina a una ballata rock che avremo mai fatto!

Parlando di evoluzioni: che cosa è cambiato dal vostro disco omonimo ad adesso? E come sono cambiati i vostri ascolti nel tempo?

Non è cambiato molto, abbiamo sempre avuto un gusto musicale piuttosto versatile. Ma abbiamo tutti scavato più a fondo in ciò che ci piace. E non abbiamo più così tanta paura di fallire, ci fidiamo di più di noi stessi adesso.

Ora facciamo un altro passo indietro nel tempo. Nel 2018 vi abbiamo visto al fianco dei Metallica, aprendo tutti i loro concerti. Potresti condividere alcuni spunti su quell’esperienza e su come tutto è nato?

In quel momento non ero nella band, ho iniziato dopo quel tour. Pensavo che avrei sentito un sacco di voci, storie interne e cose succose, ma l’unica cosa che mi hanno detto i ragazzi è che sono estremamente amichevoli e gentili.

Canti spesso in norvegese, tranne in poche eccezioni. Avete mai incontrato difficoltà con il pubblico europeo e americano a causa delle barriere linguistiche?

Si certo. Le persone in Europa e negli Stati Uniti cantano sempre i riff e non i testi. Ma penso anche che le persone, credo tutti, vogliano sentire qualcos’altro. Qualcosa di unico ed esotico, una lingua che meno dello 0,000000000001% della popolazione mondiale capisce.

Tornando a “Endling”, quale messaggio vorresti trasmettere con questo album?

Messaggi? Assolutamente nulla. Siamo sempre in fuga!

Thank you. I feel great! The album is out, and we are proud to share it with the world.

I had the pleasure of listening your new album “Endling.” Compared to “Splid,” I found its musical composition much more cohesive and direct. What are your thoughts on this? How was the creative process different from “Splid”?

Maybe, if you say so. I have also heard people say the opposite. It feels like people interpret “Endling” in so many different ways. So I don’t really know any more. The album was created during the covid years, which made us 100% focused to our thing and didn’t have so much else to do. Bars were closed, friends were not available in the same way as they used to be, and as we all know, we were all kind of prisoners in our own lives. When covid hit, we had only been two weeks on the road promoting “Splid” and I remember we found ourselves stuck in a nightliner outside of a sold out venue in München when everything closed down. We just arrived to Norway before the borders closed, and like everyone else, there was nothing to do, but sit and wait to see what was happening. Of course we were disappointed since we had to cancel most of our shows that year, but we came to the conclusion pretty early that we were gonna spend the time in a good way. We all started writing and we were pretty focused. I spent most of the time in the woods, met interesting people that lived totally cut off from society and they inspired me to write the lyrics that ended up in “Endling“. On “Splid” everything felt pretty rushed and stressed. This time we didn’t have to hurry so much.

Some fans believe that you’re moving towards a more rock-oriented direction, leaving behind the Black Metal influences of your early days. I personally think “Endling” strikes a good balance between your past and current style, exemplified by the track “Døgeniktens Kvad”. What do you think?

We never plan to make a “rock album” or a “black metal” album. We just write songs and sometimes they end up softer and sometimes it’s a blast beat from hell. Døgeniktens Kvad is the heaviest song ever written by Kvelertak. Both musically and lyrically. But at the same time, the song Endling is probably the closest we will ever get to a rock ballad!

Speaking of evolution: What has changed from your self-titled album to the present day? How have your musical influences and styles evolved over time?

Not really changed that much, we have always had a pretty versatile taste of music. But we have all been digging deeper into what we like. And we are not so afraid to fail any more, we trust ourselves more.

Now, let’s take a step back in time. In 2018, we saw you alongside Metallica, opening all their concerts. Could you share some insights about that experience and how it all came about?

I wasn’t in the band back then, I started after that tour. I thought I was gonna hear lots of rumors, inside stories and juicy stuff, but the only thing they’ve told me is that they are extremely friendly and nice. Who needs more juicy stories when we got “some kind of a monster” anyway?

You often sing in Norwegian, with a few exceptions. Have you encountered any challenges with European and American audiences due to language barriers?

Yeah sure. People in Europe and the states are always singing along to the riffs, not the lyrics. But I also think that people like this, they wanna hear something else. Something unique and exotic, a language that less than 0,000000000001% of the world population understands.

Returning to “Endling,” what message are you hoping to convey with this album?

Message? Nope. We are always on the run.
