Il post-punk post-sovietico della Generazione Z: intervista ai Molchat Doma

Attraverso una rivisitazione nostalgica e melanconica del Post Punk e della wave sovietica, i Молчатдома (Molchat doma) sono sorprendentemente emersi come uno dei maggiori fenomeni nel panorama indie degli ultimi anni, in particolare facendo breccia nella YouTube-core generation. Li abbiamo incontrati per cercare di scoprire qualche curiosità e comprendere meglio la loro idea su mode e movimenti che, magari non direttamente, li hanno visti coinvolti.

Il successo di “Этажи / Etazhi” è arrivato col tempo e, credo, anche inaspettatamente, mentre “Monument” è una delle uscite più attese dell’anno nel panorama indie mondiale. Si può dire che siano album nati diversamente? Potete raccontarci brevemente le differenze nella lavorazione e nell’esperienza in generale?

E’ stato inaspettato perché all’uscita di “Этажи / Etazhi” eravamo una band sconosciuta, quando il successo è arrivato è stato uno shock. Un sacco di persone hanno iniziato a sentirsi rappresentati dalla nostra musica e hanno iniziato a volerne ancora, aspettandosi un “monumento”. Ma nulla è cambiato – facciamo ancora ciò che ci piace ricercando sound interessanti.

E’ facile etichettare la vostra musica come coldwave, post punk, synth pop etc., generi da molti riproposti nel corso degli anni. La mia percezione è che la vostra forza risieda più nella particolare atmosfera melanconica che siete riusciti ad imprimere con forte personalità. Cosa ne pensate?

Sì, è così. Noi prendiamo semplicemente il meglio da tutti questi generi rielaborandolo in uno stile che sentiamo nostro. O comunque, ci piace credere che sia così…

In ogni caso, certe sonorità wave, synth e in generale il post punk sono divenute, dopo decenni, nuovamente un linguaggio giovanile anche grazie a voi. E’ una questione della quale dovete tener in qualche modo conto, oppure è vostra intenzione mantenere quanta più spontaneità possibile?

Bisogna capire che non siamo mai stati guidati da alcuna tendenza e movimenti alla moda, abbiamo semplicemente messo tutto il cuore e l’amore per il nostro lavoro. Se l’avessimo voluto, “Monument” sarebbe stato un album super pop con un suono moderno, ma non abbiamo cercato ciò per il semplice motivo che non ne siamo interessati. E’ incredibile come un genere così underground sia diventato popolare, ma nel bene e nel male non dipende da noi.

Tra le vostre varie influenze possiamo citare la new wave sovietica? Per alcuni aspetti ricordate una grande band come i Кино (Kino), purtroppo poco conosciuti in occidente.

Le band sovietiche sono ciò a cui ci siamo ispirati ormai diversi anni fa, ora i punti di riferimento sono cambiati. Ma, visto che è stato chiesto, ecco qui qualche gruppo: Биоконструктор, Альянс, Центр, Кофе, Хуго-Уго, Каспар Хаузер, Дурное Влияние.

Oltre alla musica, anche la copertina di “Этажи / Etazhi” è ormai divenuta un’icona. Avete qualche dettaglio o aneddoto particolare che si cela dietro le idee o la realizzazione delle vostre cover art?

Ricordo che non siamo riusciti ad arrivare a una decisione sulla copertina per molto tempo. Stavamo tornando in auto da San Pietroburgo dopo un concerto, sfogliando opzioni, e ci siamo fermati ad una stazione di servizio per una pausa sigaretta durante la quale siamo arrivati alla decisione che ora tutti potete vedere.

Il vostro successo negli USA e in generale nel mondo è ormai più che consolidato, sappiamo poco invece di come venite recepiti nella vostra terra, la Bielorussia. Siete ancora un fenomeno più, diciamo, underground, o il successo è arrivato anche in patria?

Sicuramente il successo a casa non è minimamente paragonabile a quello ottenuto all’estero, ma la situazione sta gradualmente cambiando.

L’etichetta Sacred Bones sforna continuamente artisti e album di grande interesse. Com’è nata la vostra collaborazione?

Ci è arrivata una email da parte loro!

Avete altri progetti, musicali e non, in progetto o che state sviluppando parallelamente ai Молчатдома (Molchat doma)?

Roman ha un suo progetto personale, Aktivität, per il quale sta lavorando ad un album dove ricostruisce “golden hits” dell’ultimosecolo.

The success of “Этажи / Etazhi” came over time and even unexpectedly, while “Monument” is one of the most anticipated releases of the year in the indie scene. It can be said that they are albums born in a different way? Can you briefly tell us about the differences in processing and experience in general?

It was not clear with “Etazhi” because we were an unknown group. When they fired it was a shock. A lot of people started to feel in our music. Therefore, they wanted more music from us and they were waiting for a “monument”. In fact, nothing has changed – we still do what we like and in search of interesting sound.

It is easy to label your music as coldwave, post punk, synth pop etc., genres that have been repeated by many over the years. My perception is that your strength lies more in the particular atmosphere that you managed to impress with a strong personality. What do you think?

Yes, that’s how it is. We just took the best of all genres and did it in our own style. At least we would like to believe it

In any case, certain wave sounds, synths and post punk in general have become, after decades, again a youthful language also thanks to your music. It is a question that you must take into account in some way, or it’s your intention to maintain as much spontaneity as possible?

You must understand that we have never been led by any trends and fashionable movements, but did everything with all our heart and love for our work. If we wanted, Monument would be a super pop album with a modern pop sound. But we do not want this, because we are not interested in this. It’s amazing how such an underground genre became popular, good or bad, is not up to us.

Can we mention the Soviet new wave and a band like Кино (Kino) among your various influences?

The Soviet bands are rather what we were inspired by several years ago. Now the landmarks are different. But since you asked, then let there be such groups – Биоконструктор, Альянс, Центр, Кофе, Хуго-Уго, КаспарХаузер,ДурноеВлияние.

In addition to the music, the cover art of “Этажи / Etazhi” has now become an icon. Do you have any details or particular anecdote behind the ideas or the creation of your covers?

I remember that we couldn’t decide on the cover for a long time. We drove from St. Petersburg after the concert and chose options. And we stopped at a gas station, we went out for a smoke and had a meeting. Well, we decided to stop at this option, which you all see now. Well, the truth is, he still finalized it later.

Your success in the USA and all over the world is now more than consolidated, but it’s quite unclear to us how you are received in your homeland, Belarus. You are still a more, let’s say, underground phenomenon, or success even came home?

Of course, success at home is not even close to being the same as abroad, but the situation is gradually changing.

The Sacred Bones label continually churns out artists and albums of great interest. How did your collaboration start?

We just got an email! haha.

Do you have other musical or non-musical projects planned or that you are developing in parallel with Молчатдома?

Roman has his own project Aktivität. Now he is also working on an album for it, in which the old golden hits of the last century will be reconstructed.
