Il mondo crolla ma la voglia di suonare rimane: intervista ai The Subways

Reduci da una due giorni in Italia, con due concerti a Milano e Roncade (TV), i The Subways sono ancora in tour per presentare dal vivo il loro ultimo album “Uncertain Joys“, uscito ad inizio anno su Alcopop! e che ha segnato il ritorno in scena della band dopo ben 8 anni di silenzio (qui la nostra recensione). Ne abbiamo parlato con la bassista Charlotte Cooper.

Quale messaggio state cercando di condividere con la vostra musica?

Mi piace pensare che l’obiettivo dei nostri concerti sia quello di riunire le persone per regalarci un momento di fuga dal mondo, per divertirsi con gli amici, perdersi nella musica e immergersi in un clima di allegria e serenità, almeno per una serata.

Cosa avevate in mente, mentre vi avvicinavate al nuovo album “Uncertain Joys”? Come si è differenziato il processo creativo di questo disco rispetto agli album realizzati in precedenza?

Una metà dell’album è stato registrato nello studio di registrazione di Billy (Billy Lunn, frontman della band, ndr), con una modalità alla quale siamo ben abituati. Poi però è arrivata la pandemia, e volevamo comunque continuare a registrare. Per questo abbiamo trovato un modo per lavorare sulle canzoni ognuno da casa propria, in modo da poterle finire. Ho trasformato la mia camera da letto in un mini studio di registrazione e ho inviato a Billy le mie parti di basso, voce e sintetizzatore. Ci ha pensato poi lui a mixare tutto nelle canzoni, mettendoci il suo solito pizzico di magia.

Josh Morgan, il vostro storico batterista, ha lasciato la band nell’ottobre del 2020, corretto? Come ci si sente ad andare in tour senza di lui?

Inizialmente non riuscivo a immaginare come sarebbe stato suonare senza Josh, dato che stavamo insieme da così tanti anni. Non ero sicura di come sarebbe stato il futuro della band. Ma poi abbiamo trovato Camille, che è fantastica! Adoro suonare in una sezione ritmica con lei. È una batterista di grande talento ed è molto divertente passare il tempo con lei!

Che impatto ha avuto sul vostro songwriting il modo in cui le cose sono precipitate nel mondo reale (penso ad esempio alla pandemia)?

Siamo tutti molto influenzati dagli eventi che stanno sconvolgendo il mondo in questo momento, e tutto ciò si riflette su tutto quello che facciamo. Un forte impatto lo si può sicuramente riscontrare nei testi scritti da Billy. Musicalmente, penso che la pandemia abbia davvero plasmato questo album. Ci sono stati sicuramente momenti in cui non ero sicura che realmente qualcuno avrebbe mai ascoltato il disco, il che mi ha reso meno inibita e mi sono sentito più libera di provare idee diverse.

Ci sono momenti nell’album, in particolare “Fight”, che sembrano quasi pieni di speranza. Cosa vi dà speranza in questo momento?

Ho 2 bambini piccoli di 5 e 2 anni e mi piace vedere il mondo attraverso i loro occhi. Tutto è eccitante e magico per loro.

Ho apprezzato molto la canzone “Influencer Killed The Rock Star”, soprattutto quando Billy urla è un momento molto profondo. I testi sono pieni di verità. Com’è il tuo rapporto con i social?

Ho un rapporto di amore/odio con i social media. Ovviamente sono diventati uno strumento molto importante per le band ed è un modo davvero utile per promuovere nuove uscite e tour. Io però sono davvero una frana nel gestire il mio account personale!

Vi ho visti suonare dal vivo al Sziget Festival nel 2012. Ricordo ancora il momento esatto in cui Billy è saltato giù dal palco tuffandosi sopra la folla…ho pensato: Wow! Hai qualche ricordo particolare a riguardo?

Ahah sì! Adoro il Sziget Festival, è uno dei miei festival preferiti. Quell’anno suonare sul palco principale è stato davvero magico e speciale!

Ci sono stati dischi, film e libri che vi hanno in qualche modo colpito in questo inizio di anno?

Mi è piaciuto molto il nuovo disco dei Paramore, così come “Here Is Everything”, il nuovo alvoro in studio dei The Big Moon. Poi ho iniziato a guardare Succession e ora c’è una nuova stagione che sono entusiasta di guardare quando tornerò a casa dal tour.

Sono una grande fan della vostra musica e uno dei miei programmi televisivi preferiti quando ero adolescente era The OC. Puoi raccontarmi qualche bel ricordo o aneddoto sulla vostra apparizione in The OC?

Siamo molto onorati di aver partecipato allo show. Sono anche io una grande fan, quindi è stato incredibile essere sul set e vedere gli attori lavorare. Rachel Bilson è stata molto gentile con noi e abbiamo passato un po’ di tempo a parlare con lei. Ricordo di essermi seduta a guardare la scena che prendeva forma: è stato tutto meraviglioso!

What message are you trying to share with your music?

I think with our live shows we really want to bring people together to escape the world for a little while. Have fun with their friends. Lose themselves in music and joy for an evening.

What was in your mind, as you approached the new album “Uncertain Joys”? What was different about the process for this one compared with any albums you’ve made previously?

Half of the album was recorded at Billy’s recording studio, in a way were were used to. But then the pandemic hit, and we really wanted to continue making the record. We found a way to work on songs separately from our homes so we could finish it. I turned my bedroom into a mini studio and sent Billy bass, vocal and synth parts. He then worked his magic and weaved them into the songs.

Josh Morgan, the band original drummer left in October of 2020, right? How does it feel to be going on a tour without him?

Initially I couldn’t imagine what it would be like to play without Josh, as we’d been together so many years. I wasn’t sure what the future of the band would look like. But then we found Camille, who is amazing! I love playing in a rhythm section with her. She’s a very talented drummer and a lot of fun to hang out with too!

When things are so crazy in the real world – I mean for example the pandemic in 2020 – how does that impact your songwriting?

We are all so impacted by so many events going on in the world right now, in everything we do. It’s definitely had an impact for billy lyrically for this album. Musically, I think the pandemic really shaped this album. There were definitely moments when I was unsure if anyone would ever even hear the record, which made me less inhibited and I felt more free to try different ideas.

There are moments on the album, particularly “Fight”, that feel almost hopeful. What gives you hope at the moment?

I have 2 small children who are 5 and 2 and I love to see the world through their eyes. Everything is exciting and magical for them.

I really appreciate the song “Influencer Killed The Rock Star” when Billy screams it’s a very deep moment. The lyrics are full of truth. How is your relationship with social media?

I have a love/hate relationship with social media. I think it’s become really important for bands now and it’s a really useful way to promote new releases and tours. I’m really rubbish at doing my own account though!

I saw your band play in Sziget in 2012. I still remember the exact moment Billy jumped off to stage diving above the crowd…I thought: Wow! Do you remember that?

Haha yes! I love Sziget Festival – its one of my favourites. That year in the main stage was really special.

What new music, films and books made an impression you this year?

I really like the new Paramore record and the new album by The Big Moon – Here is Everything. I started watching Succession recently and there is a new series out now, which I’m excited to watch when I get home.

I am a huge fan of your music and one of my favorite Tv show when I was a teenager was The OC.. can you tell me any good memories or stories about your appearance on The OC?

We feel so honoured that we were able to be part of the show. I am also a huge fan, so it was incredible to be on the set and see the actors working. Rachel Bilson was very kind to us and we spent some time talking with her. I remember sitting quietly at the back, watching the scene coming together – it was so cool!
